Bernardo Alvarez, the former Venezuelan ambassador to the U.S., has died, The Associated Press reported Friday.

Alvarez, who played a vital role in the bilateral relations between the two nations between 2003 and 2010, was one of Hugo Chavez’s leading diplomats during the last decade.

One of his key roles was defending Venezuela’s socialist revolution on the international stage where it was often met with heavy criticism.

Alvarez was also described as friendly and pragmatic, a rare praise from U.S. officials during a time period of complex diplomatic tensions, according to the AP.

«He was the last of the moderate Bolivarians. With Bernardo there was always a willingness to engage in dialogue that wasn’t necessarily true of others in the government,» said Michael Shifter, president of the Inter-American Dialogue.
