Caracas – Bernardo Alvarez, Venezuela’s ambassador to the Organization of American States and a deputy foreign minister, died Friday in Washington, Foreign Minister Delcy Rodriguez said. He was 60.
«Teacher, ambassador, deputy foreign minister and life-brother Bernardo Alvarez left us. An indefatigable militant of optimism, of love poetry,» Rodriguez wrote on Twitter, followed by a separate message of condolences to the envoy’s family.
Venezuelan officials did not disclose the cause of death.
Alvarez, a career diplomat, was named as representative to the OAS in October 2015, signaling a return to Washington five years after the end of his tenure as Venezuelan ambassador to the United States.
He served as ambassador to Spain from 2011-2013 before being appointed secretary-general of the Venezuelan-led Bolivarian Alliance for the Americas, or ALBA.
Alvarez combined the duties of envoy to the OAS with those of deputy foreign minister for North America.
In September, Alvarez responded to a report from OAS chief Luis Almagro about an intensification of repression in Venezuela by saying that the leader of the hemispheric body was pursuing a «hysterical obsession» with toppling Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro.
